Characteristics
Bulldogs are lovable. They are happiest when they are around people, and they tend to need a lot of attention. They enjoy a loving environment and should not be forced to endure fear or neglect. They are usually quiet and make a good companion.
The Bulldog breed is a friendly breed and will leave with anyone who will take them; therefore, it is best to keep them indoors and in a secure, fenced yard when outdoors.
The short face of a Bulldog causes them breathing difficulties, which are magnified in the hot weather. Bulldogs must be indoor dogs all of the time. In hot weather they tend to overheat. They need to be protected from heat exhaustion. When walking a Bulldog in warmer weather, always bring along ice water.
The Bulldog coat is short, smooth, and tends to shed all year long. Bulldogs have sensitive skin and must remain clean without removing their natural oils. Their wrinkles tend to collect dirt and bacteria and need to be cleaned with an antibacterial every couple days.
Bulldogs are playful in short spurts. They need little exercise in comparison to other breeds. A short walk each day will suffice, and even in the winter they will be hot upon return and will need plenty of water.
When not playing or resting, bulldogs chew. They can chew through almost anything. Having a lot of chew toys helps them contain this habit. It also helps build muscles in their jaw and head. Nylon bones (Nylabones) are best for bulldogs because they cannot be destroyed or get caught in their throat like other dog toys.
Bulldogs love to eat and will eat most anything, even vegetables. Since the breed tends to become overweight, it is best to feed bulldogs a premium dog food and no table scraps.
Despite their general appearance, Bulldogs are not normally aggressive. They are not intended to be guard dogs even though their appearance tends to deter potential intruders. This docile breed is more likely to watch a burglar run off with your worldly possessions than attempt to deter their activities.
